Data breaches have become an all-too-common feature of life today and they pose a significant threat to all of us because regardless of how careful we are at protecting our personal data, we are only as secure as the companies and governmental agencies that hold our information.  Today’s data breach involves Aspen Dental which operates more than a thousand dental offices around the country.  Aspen Dental recently disclosed that it had suffered a data breach as a result of a ransomware attack.  Among the information compromised was Social Security numbers, dates of birth, bank financial data and other sensitive information all of which can lead to identity theft.

TIPS

Aspen Dental customers should be skeptical of any email that appears to come from Aspen Dental that asks you to click on a link or provide personal information because the information compromised in the data breach could be used to create personally tailored spear phishing emails intended to lure you into clicking on malware infected links or providing personal information that can be used to make you a victim of identity theft. Trust me, you can’t trust anyone.

Although in this particular data breach, it does not appear that passwords were compromised, the data breach serves as a good reminder that you should make sure that you have a unique password for each of your online accounts so that if one of your passwords is compromised in a data breach, all of your accounts will not be in danger.  If your information is compromised in a data breach, you should immediately change the password for that account.

Freezing your credit is also something everyone should do.  It is free and easy to do.  In addition, it protects you from someone using your identity to obtain loans or make large purchases even if they have your Social Security number.  If you have not already done so, put a credit freeze on your credit reports at all of the major credit reporting agencies.  Here are links to each of them with instructions about how to get a credit freeze:
Aspen Dental is offering free credit monitoring for people whose Social Security numbers were compromised.  For more information you can call Aspen Dental’s call center at 833-919-3310.  It should be noted, however that the three major credit reporting agencies now provide free weekly access to your credit reports so you can monitor your credit reports easily on your own.  Here is the only link to use to get your free credit reports.https://www.annualcreditreport.com/index.action
Some scammers have websites that appear to offer “free” credit reports, but if you read the fine print, you often may find that you have signed up for unnecessary services.
