Recently there have been a large number of scams where police officers and firefighters have been contacted by identity thieves posing as AFLAC insurance representatives.  They generally tell the potential victims that the city or town is changing its insurance coverages and now is offering AFLAC disability insurance, life insurance and health insurance supplements.  They then provide application packets that require the inclusion of important personal data.  This information is then used for identity theft.

TIPS

If someone other than a person with whom you are familiar from your company’s own HR department contacts you about benefits or asks for personal information, you should be skeptical.  Do not give personal information to anyone unless you are sure that they need it and they are legitimate.  In this case, check with your own HR department and work through them in regard to any benefit programs.
